VWU Global Dean Dr. Deirdre Gonsalves-Jackson to Teach Urban Ecology at LUJ

From July 21 - August 12, 2024, Virginia Wesleyan University's Dr. Deirdre Gonsalves-Jackson will be co-teaching BIO 280: Topics in Biology - Urban Ecology here at our campus in Ryogoku.

Since July 2020, Virginia Wesleyan University (VWU) has been Lakeland University's partner institution, meaning undergraduate students here at LUJ have the opportunity to transfer hassle-free from here in Japan to either our home campus in Sheboygan, Wisconsin or VWU's campus in Norfolk, Virginia.

The partnership has been a great success, with LUJ students already taking advantage of the opportunity.

For Dr. Gonsalves-Jackson, Dean of VWU Global, who made a preliminary trip here in early March, the class is an opportunity to add new sites to the class curriculum. Besides learning more about "how urban environments act as ecosystems" with a focus "on water, air, energy and communicable diseases," the course will take students to a variety of locations across Japan, such as Mikimoto Pearl Island, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, the Sumida Aquarium (40 minutes by foot from the LUJ campus building) and the Ueno Zoological Gardens (a 50-minute walk), to name a few. The class is a great opportunity for LUJ and VWU students to discuss and collaborate both in the classroom and during field trips.

The other VWU professor teaching the course will be Dr. Maynard Schaus, whose research focuses on, among other topics, aquatic ecology. To learn more about Dr. Gonsalves-Jackson, check out this Q and A over on the VWU website.
