Professor Dan Sloan of Lakeland University Japan Discusses the Future of Journalism Education at FCCJ Panel
Oct. 3, 2025
Lakeland University Japan is proud to highlight Daniel Sloan, LUJ Instructor and President of the FCCJ (Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan), for his recent participation in a panel discussion on the future of journalism education in Japan.
The panel, held in September 2025, brought together experienced journalists and academics, including Matthew Wilson (Temple University Japan), Isabel Reynolds (Bloomberg Tokyo), and David McNeill (University of the Sacred Heart), to explore best practices in newsrooms, media literacy, and the challenges posed by artificial intelligence.
Sloan emphasized the importance of practical intelligence, critical thinking, investigative skills, and clear communication in preparing students for a rapidly changing media landscape. The discussion also highlighted differences between Japanese and foreign media approaches, with foreign outlets often valuing diverse skills and independent thought over formal journalism degrees.
With technology and AI reshaping how news is produced and consumed, Sloan noted the crucial role of educators in teaching students how to extract, verify, and interpret information. The panel underscored that a flexible, skills-based approach to journalism education is essential for students who hope to thrive in this evolving profession.
