Lakeland President Dr. Beth Borgen Visits Japan Campus

From November 4 to the 11, Lakeland President Dr. Beth Borgen came to the LUJ campus in Ryogoku. By her side was Jonathan Feld, LUW Senior Vice President of Student Affairs & Enrollment, and Lakeland’s Vice President for Finance & CFO, Lenora Stuckmann. While Dr. Borgen had twice in the past visited LUJ’s campus, this was the first time for both Mr. Feld and Ms. Stuckmann.

Their one-week schedule was packed. For Dr. Borgen, the visit included a trip over to the Mayor’s Office to meet Sumida Mayor Tooru Yamamoto and other representatives. Dr. Borgen also met with the LUJ faculty, both as a group and individually, and had a productive breakfast with staff and several LUJ students. Mr. Feld and Ms. Stuckmann, meanwhile, had meetings with administrative staff about issues related to budgetary and operational matters.

On the weekends, the trio observed LUJ’s ever-growing English Club, as well as the Dual Language Program and weekend English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes.

Still, the trip wasn’t all work. The team did manage to find some time to visit the Tokyo Sky Tree, a brisk 35-minute walk from LUJ’s campus building, and the renowned Hokusai Museum, only a 3-minute stroll from the campus front entrance.

Although she had visited LUJ in the past, there were quite a few ‘firsts’ for Dr. Borgen. “This was the first time I was able to visit during class sessions,” she explained. “It was great to see such a vibrant and diverse campus in action! This was also the first time I was able to experience more of Tokyo. I can’t believe how many great sights you can see within a walking distance of campus.

For the president, the trip included many valuable memories. “I hope to share my photos and experiences with students at our Wisconsin campus and encourage them to consider studying in Tokyo.”

Dr. Borgen has been Lakeland’s 18th president since January 2021. Actually, Lakeland has a long and proud history. The school was founded by German immigrants in 1862, calling itself the Mission House College and Seminary. In February 1956, the college was renamed Lakeland. LUJ was founded in 1991 by Dr. David R. Black, the 13th and 17th president of Lakeland.
