LUJ Student Wins Speech Contest
On November 16, 2022, Lakeland University Japan partnered with Bunkyo Gakuin to create a new speech contest. Officially called the 1st Annual LUJ x BGU Presentation Contest, ten students, five from each university, squared off at BGU’s Jintai Hall auditorium.
The theme of the contest was “The Future Is…” and contestants, speaking in front of over 200 students, family, friends, were given between 4-5 minutes to offer their vision of what’s to come. The two judges, LUJ’s Dr. Paul Snowden and BGU’s Dean Unoura, were given the difficult task of choosing a winner.
After ten excellent speeches, first prize went to LUJ’s Mayuki Mori, while another LUJ student, Hirokazu Okamoto, snagged third place along with the audience prize.
Mori’s winning speech, “The Future is…Wrong,” was a philosophical dive into the concept of time, and how our prognostications often turn out to be incorrect. She ended by quoting a character from Back to the Future, scientist Doc Brown: “Your future hasn’t been written yet. No one’s has. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one.”
