Check out several frequently answered questions we receive about the scholarship down below!
What costs does the scholarship cover?
The Sumida High School Scholarship covers a certain percentage of tuition every semester.
Recipients of the scholarship are required to cover the remaining portion of their tuition fees, as well non-tuition fees that are applied each semester and/or year. Non-tuition fees include, but are not limited to:
Will I still receive my scholarship if I study abroad the U.S. partner schools (LUW, VWU)?
This answer is both Yes and No!
The Sumida Area Residents & High School Scholarships will be applied to your tuition even when you participate in short-term study abroad at the Lakeland University Wisconsin (LUW) or Virginia Wesleyan University (VWU) campuses. Short-term study abroad semesters are a part of LUJ's Batten & Black School of International Studies program, and allows students to study for 1-2 semesters at the LUW or VWU campuses at the same tuition rate as LUJ. Students can choose to study abroad for 1-2 semesters at these campuses once they have completed their first year of the Undergraduate program at LUJ.
The scholarship can NOT be applied to your tuition if you decide to enroll full-time (three or more semesters) and/or complete your degree at LUW or VWU. In this case, all LUJ students receive a separate scholarship that is offered when doing a long-term study abroad or degree completion pathway at the partner schools.
How does the scholarship committee select the students who are awarded?
LUJ's Scholarship Committee looks at three primary areas when selecting the scholarship students.
Please note that there is no minimum high school GPA required to apply for the scholarship, but the GPA will be reviewed and calculated as a part of the scholarship evaluation.
How do awarded students get involved in the Student Government Association (SGA)?
Awarded students are expected to join the SGA each semester of enrollment. This gives them the opportunity to collaborate with other LUJ students and support the university by planning events, supporting LUJ clubs, and engaging in various volunteer & outreach projects.
The SGA typically holds meetings once a week during the semesters. Scholarship students who do not actively participate in these meetings may have their scholarships discontinued.
As a scholarship student, what kind of PR activities would I be involved in?
As a scholarship recipient, you would be asked to support the Admissions Office with various recruiting and marketing projects. This could include attending a monthly Open Campus event, meeting and talking with new high school applicants, providing campus tours to visiting students, etc.
These activities alternate between scholarship students, so it does not require any one student to join a large number of activities. PR-related requests will also be scheduled around your class schedules, ensuring there are no schedule conflicts.
Is this scholarship offered in the 2025-26 year as well?
Yes, the scholarships will be available for students who begin their senior year at the start of April 2025! The scholarship amounts will remain the same as the 2024-25 year, but the application period for the 2025-26 scholarships will be much earlier.
Please check the LUJ website or contact our Admissions Office (admissions@japan.lakeland.edu) for specific details about the 2025-26 Sumida Area Residents & High School Scholarships.
Is the scholarship only for the Undergraduate program, or can I use it during EAP as well?
The scholarships can applied early if the student enters the EAP program. In this case, the same scholarship percentage would be applied to tuition in both the EAP and Undergraduate programs until the full value of the scholarship is awarded.
