LUJ Holds Summer Commencement Ceremony

On Saturday, August 5, 2023, LUJ awarded both Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees as well as 2-year Associate of Arts (A.A.) degrees to students who have completed their studies.

The ceremony took place in the 6th Floor LUJ Lecture Hall, the weather outside sunny, clear skies, around 33 degrees Celsius.

After dress rehearsal, friends, family, and guests of the graduates began entering the lecture hall around 1:30 pm, with graduating students as well as faculty lining up.

The ceremony officially started at 2 pm. Dean Charles Laurier delivered opening remarks, followed by a short video recording given by Rahm Emanuel, the US Ambassador to Japan. After the video, the Sumida mayor Mr. Toru Yamamoto gave a speech discussing education as well as the continuing partnership of LUJ and the city of Sumida.

Following the mayor was a recorded address given by Dr. Elizabeth Borgen, president of Lakeland University in Wisconsin. And then, at long last, the presentation of diplomas began for the Class of 2023, with Viet Hung Ha being chosen as the graduating class speaker.

After closing remarks, pictures were taken in and around the LUJ Lecture Hall. See below for some of our own pictures from the graduation.
