Lakeland Japan Got Spooktacular This October!
October at Lakeland University Japan brought chills, thrills, and plenty of Halloween spirit to campus! From costumes and candy to cultural exchanges and creative student activities, this year’s Halloween events showcased the vibrant and diverse community that makes LUJ unique.
Lakeland Japan fully embraced the spooky season. Students and staff decked out the 4th floor and Muskie Hall with Halloween décor, turning them into haunted halls filled with eerie delights. Student Affairs added to the fun by handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, making the month extra sweet!
Lakeland’s staff, faculty, and students brought laughter and creativity to campus. As one of our Instagram captions joked: “Serious about education, not so serious about Halloween!” Who else saw a giant banana teaching an English class or catwoman behind the computer? Even Michael Jackson made an appearance at a speech contest!
The Student Government Association (SGA) held a Halloween party including some horror movies on show. Here is where the face-painting was taken to another level!
Cultural Awareness: Día de Muertos
Adding a meaningful twist to the celebrations, LUJ professor Dr. Pelaez introduced students to Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). Highlighting the importance of intercultural understanding, Dr. Pelaez explained how this Mexican tradition celebrates life and honors those who have passed. An ofrenda (altar) was set up to remember influential women activists and writers like Hiratsuka Raicho, Bell Hooks, and Rosario Castellanos—champions of equality and inclusion.
The English Club added extra magic to Halloween with their very own party! The event featured mummy wrapping, Halloween bingo, a large-scale game of hide-and-seek across campus, and other games with prizes. Students also indulged in trick-or-treating and embraced the spirit of the holiday with festive activities that brought the campus together.
Stay tuned for more exciting campus events, and if you missed out this year, there’s always next Halloween to join in the fun!
