Lakeland Lectures - Lindsay Nelson

What is/was J-horror? In this lecture, Professor Lindsay Nelson looks at the impact of films like The Ring and The Grudge and how Japanese horror films have changed since the late 1990s. In particular, she examines the way that media objects and technologies like VHS cassettes, cell phones, and YouTube--as well as the "moral panics" surrounding those technologies--have been central to J-horror's success.

Lindsay Nelson is an associate professor in the department of political science and economics at Meiji University. She has been researching and writing about Japanese cinema (with a focus on Japanese horror films) for more than twenty years. Her work has appeared in East Asian Journal of Popular Culture, Journal of Japanese and Korean Cinema, and Japanese Studies. Her book, Circulating Fear: Japanese Horror, Fractured Realities, and New Media, is available from Lexington Books.
