7PM
Muskie Hall (6F)
Our 3rd and final Lakeland Lecture of the semester will be held Friday, November 1 at 7 PM.
“From Women to Westerners: Untold Stories in the History of Chanoyu”, presented by Dr. Rebecca Corbett
Dr. Corbett is a prof at the University of Southern California and is currently in Japan doing research on Chanoyu (we un-cool squares call it "Japanese tea ceremony") as a visiting scholar at Waseda.
She is going to talk about the history of Chanoyu, while primarily focusing on the lesser-known female and non-Japanese practitioners of the art.
She argues that a focus on a wider range of tea practitioners and perspectives on chanoyu is important for understanding the historical development of the practice and its place in contemporary Japanese society.
As usual, please tell your students (it's a great extra credit opportunity) and spread the word to anyone else who might be interested--Lakeland Lectures are open to the public.
