IMPORTANT: Because of temporary issues with the my.lakeland software, Academic Students registering for Summer 2020 courses must register using a different method than usual. It is therefore necessary for you to watch the video at the link below. The video is about 8 ~ 9 minutes long, and demonstrates the correct way to sign up for classes in the coming week of registration.

If the video will not play below, click on this link to see the video on YouTube.

If the video below does not show good enough quality, please expand to make it full-screen, or else go to the YouTube page and watch it there.

Remember, if you do not watch this video, you may not be able to sign up for classes for Summer! Make sure you watch the video, pay attention, and sign up for courses in exactly the same way!

Also remember that if the "Course Search" function does not work properly, log out of my.lakeland, and then log back in and try again.

Dear students registering for Summer 2020,

As it has been announced by Dr. Brender, the campus will be closed for the rest of the semester. Since the registration for the upcoming term can be done only online, we expect you can register without any problems next week. Please read the Registration Instructions that you received from your academic advisor carefully and follow the instructions. (Also available at

On the Registration Instruction and Academic Registration Guide on the bottom of Class Schedule, it is explained that no telephone support will be provided. However, due to the current circumstances, we will accept phone inquiries when students encounter any technical issues. Please log into your My.Lakeland and keep your registration page open before and while you call us. There may be times we need to have a screenshot of your screen to identify the issue, so please be prepared.

Please keep in mind that at 23:59 PM on March 19th, the online registration will shut down. For those who did not register online on their designated registration day and beyond, they will have to contact Academic Affairs to be able to register for available seats.

A Message from the Dean, Dr. Alan Brender

学部長 Dr.Alan Brenderからの新型コロナウィルスに関するメッセージ

 Dear Students,

I hope you are coping well with your online classes. LUJ’s administrators are closely monitoring the developments of COVID-19, and have decided to continue all courses online for the rest of the Spring 2020 semester. We greatly appreciate everyone’s efforts and cooperation as classes continue virtually, and want to remind you to communicate closely with your instructors. Information regarding final exams will be sent to all students in the near future.

The campus will remain closed to students for the rest of the teaching weeks. We are still evaluating how final exams will be administered as well as testing for other purposes.

TOEFL Tests and Placement Tests for New Academic Students

EAP and graduating students need to continue checking their LUJ email, as important updates regarding test dates, times, and locations will be sent soon.

Students with Travel Plans

We are requiring any students who have recently or will travel outside of Japan to fill out an online “Travel Plan Survey”, which will be sent to your email from the Student Affairs office shortly. Students returning from a high-risk area, or who believe they may have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus, will be asked to self-isolate for the recommended period of 14 days prior to returning to the LUJ campus. The most updated information can be found on the CDC website page for Travel Health Notices.

How to Minimize the Risk to Exposure

As the spread of COVID-19 continues, it becomes ever-more important to do everything you can to minimize the risk of exposure. This includes:

1. Avoiding unnecessary large crowds and contact with people who have contracted the virus,

2. Avoid traveling to areas which may be at high risk,

3. Maintaining proper hygiene methods.

To LUJ Academic Students,

Waitlist image

Students should keep in mind that even if a class is full, there is an online waiting list

This waiting list, however, does not guarantee registration for classes. Therefore, when you sign up for the waiting list, you must also register for an alternate class, since most students do not get into waitlisted class. Academic Affairs will contact you directly if a seat becomes avairable in the class you are waitlisted for. Otherwise, all waiting lists will be canceled on Monday, March 23rd.

Following registration week, if you cannot get into a class you need or strongly want, please wait until May 4th, 2020. This is the start day of the "Add/Drop Period" when another waitlist will become available if your desired class is still full at the time of attempted registration.

As always, only sign up for classes which are approved by your advisor.

Thank you,

Academic Affairs

A Message from the Dean, Dr. Alan Brender

学部長 Dr.Alan Brenderからの新型コロナウィルスに関するメッセージ

Dear Students,

I hope your online classes are proceeding well and that you have been able to overcome any initial technical problems you may have encountered with online instruction. If you are still facing problems, please contact your instructors by e-mail, Blackboard or any platforms they have suggested -- and you are able to access. If you are unable to contact your instructors, please inform the Academic Affairs office () to obtain assistance.

At this time, we are monitoring the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation and will continue with the current plan of closing the campus next week. We will continue evaluating whether we can restart classroom teaching on March 16, as well as the guidelines established by the Japanese government and other institutions in Japan to determine when we might resume in-person classes.

Our primary concern is your health, and we don’t want to jeopardize that by resuming classroom teaching prematurely. Please check the blog frequently for updates.

We strongly suggest that those students who have returned to their home countries to self-monitor and isolate themselves for at least 14 days to ensure that you were not infected while you were in Japan. If you do come down with symptoms of the virus, follow the advice of your local authorities in your country on how to get tested.  Please keep us informed of your whereabouts. We urge you to avoid travelling, especially to areas that have experienced outbreaks of the virus.

Please stay safe and do your best to follow the precautions listed below.

To help limit the possible spread of COVID-19 in the LUJ community, going forward we would like to request that all students take the following steps if you have a fever or other cold symptoms:

  1. Conscientiously use good hygiene measures and cough etiquette;
  2. Refrain from going out; and
  3. Measure and record your body temperature daily.
  4. If you take a break from classes, please reach out to your professors; you are responsible for missed classes and meeting deadlines.
  5. If you have cold symptoms (including a fever higher than 37.5 degrees Celsius 99.5, cough or difficulty breathing) or have been in contact with confirmed case of coronavirus, please report this to the Student Affairs office () so we can arrange for any necessary assistance.

For all students, the health information that we shared previously continues to apply, namely:

Wearing a mask whenever possible, and if you don't wear one, cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow. Regularly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol-based hand rubs or wipes with 60%-95% alcohol. Regularly clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that could be contaminated with germs (such as your phone). Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Try to avoid unnecessary crowds and gatherings.

Review the information on the coronavirus posted by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare (English: the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare).

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends as a general guideline that those who experience symptoms stay at home until they are free of fever, signs of a fever, and any other symptoms for at least 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing or other symptom-altering medicines (e.g. cough suppressants).

Please continue checking the LUJ blog for updates regarding the coronavirus.

Thank you.

2. 外出を控える。

3. 毎日体温を測定して記録する。

4. 授業を欠席する場合は担当教員に連絡をとり、遅れを取り戻すこと。
